Zero to Little Prep Work Involved to Make Your Own Bait Lures
Fish are driven, like all living creatures, by hunger. The need to eat has cost many their lives. Many might say that fish are just dumb. Fish aren’t stupid otherwise there wouldn’t be a whole bunch of people out there trying to trick them. Fish are smart enough to know that in the trail of a passing motor boat there will be some fish that get hit by the propeller blades and some that will momentarily lose their bearings. Bigger fish will then go after the smaller fish, now easy marks, for their next meal. Unfortunately bigger fish are often targeted in the bubbly aftermath by trailing lures and baited hooks.
In comparison, people use trickery for sport and food. Fish are just trying to survive. Mavericks of the fishing world spent plenty on their ornamental lures and live squirming bait. They don’t have to. Baits can be found in the kitchen. People who want to feed the fish and help in conservation can use the same kitchen foods.
One such food can be found in the candy aisles or sitting atop a kitchen table or counter. Its not found in every house and most probably wouldn’t consider it to be food at all but its eatable. It is the Gummy Worm. Not the gummy bears, the Gummy Worm. The gummy worm like many flies, lures and baits is colorful. It is worm shaped and jiggles wiggles and shakes if held between two fingers and shook up and down or sideways. This movement is fluid in the water just like a real worm and can get attention from fish. It’s better to break the gummy worm into two or more pieces so the fish can get a hold of it easier.
Another food that is worm shaped with fluid movement is noodles or spaghetti. Instant noodles that can be cooked in a microwave are relatively cheap. Be sure to cook the noodles or spaghetti before feeding or luring fish. Cooking them makes them soft and flexible. Uncooked would make them hard to bait a lure.
Peels from apples or potatoes can be sliced into thin strips and used as bait or fish food right along with beef jerky.
Getting fish to swim up to the surface for the enjoyment of viewing them while they eat can be done by tossing cereals in the water. A good cereal to use is “Cheerios” or similar cereals.

Since most cat foods contain fish and some dog foods throw the fish some of kitty or spike’s food. It doesn’t matter whether it’s wet or dry. The wet food will probably sink while the dry will sit on the surface for a bit before starting to sink.
